Mr. Pilpel was the first Austrian that this third generation Irish American ever knew. He was proud and dignified and smart but most importantly, he had a great sense of humor, which he needed in dealing with me and his daughter. To think that he left his homeland to serve in the U.S. military and that he went on to develop patents for an American company. It makes me wonder what else I didn't know about this man. What I do know is that he was kind and thoughtful of me, and that he provided me experiences that my own family was unable to provide. My sincere condolences to his family, especially my fav, Catherine. He was a special man.
