Jack Broitman, of Avon CT, son of Abraham and Lillian (Rosen) Broitman, died peacefully on August 29, 2010. He was predeceased by his brother Carl. Born July 1, 1927 in Philadelphia PA, Jack was the beloved husband of Susan Little Jansen, and adored father of Gena Hunt of Hudson NH, Tina Kane of Newington CT and Sara Pierce of West Hartford CT. He grew up in Brooklyn NY, graduating from LaFayette High School in 1944. Jack was inducted into the Army in 1945 and served with the Armed Forces Radio in Korea as ‘Jack the Bellboy’. He married his first wife, Adele Russak, whom he met at camp WoChiCa, and graduated from NYU in 1949 with a degree in Radio Broadcasting. His first radio job was at WWNH in Rochester NH. On the train ride from Brooklyn, he chose the on-air name of Jack Brooks, which he used for the rest of his professional career. He loved this job, especially his ‘man on the street’ segments. He moved to the Hartford area in 1951 and began work at WCCC as News Director. He moved on to WPOP in 1960. He told many wonderful stories about his radio career, delighting his children and grandchildren. In 1964, Jack went to work for the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants as Executive Director. Under his guidance, the society expanded its membership greatly and developed a program of on-going professional development. Under Jack’s stewardship, the CSCPA quickly gained the reputation as one of the leading professional membership associations for CPAs in the country. In his years with CSCPA, he traveled widely and formed many close friendships across the country. In addition to his professional career, Jack sat on the board of the Hebrew Home, and served as chairman of the Human Relations Commission of Bloomfield. He did volunteer reading for the blind for CRIS Radio for over 25 years. Jack also served on the board of the Hartford Family Service Society. He also played a pivotal role in the formation of Community Accounting Aid and Services, Inc. In his retirement, when he and Sue were not traveling abroad or spending time at their home at the Adirondack League Club, Jack returned to his first love, radio drama. He formed the Radio Workshop Players and with them recorded many classic radio dramas and comedies, and produced original radio dramas, most recently at the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum in Windsor, CT. In addition to his wife and daughters, Jack leaves sons-in-law Randall Kane and Mark Pierce, grand-children Loren and Eric Hunt and Erin Day, Emily and Jonathan Kane, Zoe and Lila Pierce, and was eagerly anticipating the birth of his first great-grandson. He also leaves his sisters-and-brothers-in-law, his first wife, grandsons-in-law, his nieces and nephews and many, many dear and loving friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, September 11, 2010 at the Unitarian Society of Hartford, 50 Bloomfield Ave, Hftd CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hebrew Home 1 Abrams Blvd, West Hftd 06117 or the Hartford Stage Company 50 Church St., Hftd, CT 06103.
